Home > About the Conference

The CELM 2008 National Conference is the biennial gathering of engineers at all stages in their career, focused on the “non-technical” aspects of professional development.  This year’s theme “Engineers: Driving Australia’s Future” sets the scene for the profession to discuss the role of the Engineer as a community and business leader, and in setting the social, commercial and political agenda for Australia over the next decade and beyond. As a knowledge profession, is the knowledge of engineers sufficiently valued and harnessed at the most senior levels?

Anecdotal evidence suggests that engineers are significantly under-represented in the senior executive and boardroom ranks of Australia’s business community. Is it skill-set, preference or a stereotype that allows invisible barriers to be perpetuated? Outstanding keynote speakers and a list of industry experts from within and outside the profession will address issues of long term importance to every engineer, including corporate and individual strategies for developing leadership skills and commercial skills, the transition from technocrat to business leader and identifying and developing the skills sets that make engineers valuable as senior executives and in the boardroom.

Conference Convenors - Engineers Australia

Engineers Australia is the national forum for the advancement of engineering and the professional development of our members. The organisation has over 80,000 members across all engineering disciplines.

Our role also includes activities that cultivate lifelong learning by our members, champion professional and ethical conduct, celebrate excellence in engineering outcomes and take the lead in advocacy for the profession.

Engineers Australia relies on the combined efforts of our network of active members - who volunteer their expertise, enthusiasm, and time - and our dedicated staff who support them and give effect to the many initiatives necessary for us to sustain our relevance into the future.

Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management (CELM)

The key purpose of the CELM is to enhance professional opportunities for members of Engineers Australia by developing, recognising and promoting their ability to participate in and lead business, innovation and change.

The objectives of CELM include the promotion of engineering leadership and management by raising awareness and expectations of excellence with individuals, business, government and the wider community and to encourage and empower more engineers to build on their professional engineering disciplines for leadership and management roles.

CELM seeks to engage the interest of members whose careers encompass broader disciplines and responsibilities and to offer opportunities for personal development and recognition of achievements.
